Our Role as HMIS Lead

Leading Data Integration in Homeless Services

HandsOn River Region serves as the Homeless Management Information System (HMIS) Lead for the Mid-Alabama Coalition for the Homeless (MACH) Continuum of Care (CoC). In this capacity, we oversee the collection, management, and reporting of data related to homelessness services across our service area. This role is vital in ensuring that our community has accurate, timely, and standardized information to address homelessness effectively.

What is HMIS?

The Homeless Management Information System (HMIS) is a data collection tool required by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) for all communities receiving federal homelessness assistance.

Specifically, HMIS is a local information technology system used to collect client-level data on the provision of housing and services to homeless individuals and families. It enables communities to understand the scope of homelessness, track service utilization, and evaluate program performance.

HMIS systems are crucial for coordinating services, tracking outcomes, and informing policy decisions related to homelessness.

  • System Coordination: HMIS helps to create a more coordinated and efficient system for providing services to individuals experiencing homelessness by allowing different agencies and providers to share information and track client progress.
  • Outcome Measurement: By tracking client outcomes, HMIS data can be used to evaluate the effectiveness of different programs and interventions, identify areas for improvement, and inform future planning and resource allocation.
  • Policy and Planning: The data collected in HMIS is also used at the local, state, and federal levels to better understand the scope and nature of homelessness, identify trends, and develop effective strategies for addressing key issues.

HMIS Partnerships and Implementation

As the HMIS Lead, HandsOn River Region collaborates closely with MACH to provide standardized and timely information that improves access to housing and services. Together, we strengthen efforts to end homelessness by ensuring that data is accurately recorded and accessible to all relevant stakeholders. This partnership is essential for coordinating services and resources across our community.

PromisSe Implementation with One Roof

HandsOn River Region is also an integral part of the PromisSe implementation, led by One Roof in Birmingham, Alabama. PromisSe is a shared HMIS platform utilized by HUD Continuums of Care and homeless service providers across the Southeast. It enhances the efficiency of partner agencies by identifying gaps and duplications in service, thereby improving coordinated care for individuals experiencing homelessness.

Our Commitment to Data-Driven Solutions

By leading the HMIS efforts in our CoC and participating in the PromisSe implementation, HandsOn River Region demonstrates our commitment to data-driven solutions in addressing homelessness. We believe that accurate data is crucial for making informed decisions, securing funding, and ultimately providing better services to those in need.
